Scott skis two Everest's in one day!

Ski 4 Cancer - About Us

Set up by a team of skiing and snowboarding enthusiasts, all of whom have lost a family member or a friend to cancer, Ski 4 Cancer is primarily a provider of respite breaks for British families affected by cancer.

We also make grants to cancer care institutions and support research into the positive effects of exercise and altitude and how they can help with cancer prevention and recovery.

On Thursday 9 March 2017, Scott Hammond will attempt to set a new World Record by skiing twice the vertical height of Mount Everest, the World's highest mountain, in just one day!

Scott's challenge is a BIG one. In just one day he intends to ski a vertical height of 58,058 feet or 17,696 metres.

To put this into perspective, that's as high as Concorde used to fly or the equivalent height of 7,000 household staircases! The event will take place in Saalbach (Austria).

Scott commented:

I am undertaking this mammouth challenge in memory of my wife Wenche (Pronounced Venke).

Wenche died from cancer last year at the age of 42 after a six month battle, leaving behind me and our five year old daughter Maja.

The Wenche Hammond Fund is being launched in the lead up to the main Ski 4 Cancer World Record attempt which will see over 250 people ski the height of Mt. Everest once.

I am going to ski that twice however (assuming the conditions are right). Even for me, this is going to be a massive challenge. An 18 Kilometre vertical is a huge distance to ski in one day...

Wenche lived life to the full. Coming from Lillehammer (Norway), Wenche was a good alpine and telemark skier. Her first job was working for the organisers of the 1994 Lillehammer Winter Olympics!

After we met in Greece in 1999, we worked five winter seasons together in Verbier (Switzerland) before moving back to Norway.

Wenche landed her dream job as a trainee accountant in January 2016. She worked there for just 8 days before finding out she had cancer.

Please give what you can no matter how big or small to Wenche’s fund and let’s make a difference.

Thank you.

Scott
