About The Race
The Patrouille des Glaciers (PDG) is an international ski mountaineering race organised by the Swiss Army. The PDG is widely regarded as the hardest mountain endurance race in the World. The race routes lead from Zermatt to Verbier (Course Z) or from Arolla to Verbier (Course A) and must be completed in one single stage. Both courses rise from near sea-level to over 3,500m.
This mountaineering challenge was invented in the run up to World War II, when mountain specialists of the Swiss Armed Forces were searching for ways to verify their physical and technical readiness to fight a war. The race takes place every two years. Organised by the Swiss Army, the race attracts military and civilian teams from all over the world.
Interest in the race has increased steadily over the years. Even though the capacity of the race has been doubled in recent years, there are usually not enough starting slots available for all athletes interested in participating.
